about us
In 1919 Charles Spellman held a tent meeting which resulted in the formation of a small group of believers that began to hold worship services in various homes. When they ran out of space in their homes they rented the Scales House, which at that time was a vacant Christian Church. A three month revival took place in 1922 with many coming to know Jesus Christ, and resulted in the rental of the Old Paint Shop located on Hixon in 1924. Real estate at 8th and Decatur was purchased in 1927, and in July of the same year a newly constructed 40x60' building was dedicated as the 'Full Gospel Tabernacle'. The congregation thrived and grew, bringing about necessary structural additions: a basement for Sunday School classes in 1942, and a 20x52' addition in 1948. In just five short years the need would arise to relocate once again, and property at 1510 Lincoln Avenue was purchased in 1953, with construction of a new worship facility beginning in 1954. It was at this time that the congregation voted to change the name to 'The Neighborhood Church of the Assemblies of God'. The newly constructed church was dedicated in May of 1955 with approximately 100 members. Over the next four decades families with two and three generations attending and newcomers alike met there in God's gracious presence. Since March of 2003 we have occupied the present location on E. Allen Rd., realizing as we look back on our history that our strength is not in where we meet, but in Who we meet.
